Tasting Note

Valpiedra’s style can be very modern, but with this 2006 Reserva the character is earthier, more focused upon complexity than fruitiness or oakiness. This shows the sawdust of American oak barrels, as well as spicy plums, some red raisins, herbs, lots of powerful black cherries, along with grilled mushrooms. Drink now or in the next several years.

Wine Description

After 22 months in new French oak barrels, Finca Valpiedra, Reserva 2006 has a high-intensity, cherry red color and purple rim. Its aromas are very complex and elegant with perfectly subtle mineral notes, as well as the red and black fruit notes, with hints of incense. All of these sensations come together with fine notes of vanilla, cedar, tobacco, and spices from the new French oak. In the mouth, the initial sensation is smooth with large volume, but also a very fine tannic structure that makes the wine tasty and round. The freshness of the Graciano variety improves its balance, and the wine shows a very long aftertaste and pleasant finish.

About the Winery

Finca Valpiedra is located in the best area of DOCa Rioja at a spectacular meander of the Ebro River. The exceptional conditions of this 198-acre vineyard come from its mesoclimate and the type of soil formed by a layer of boulders and limestone. These stones play a basic role in the wine’s quality as they act as a natural filter and supply the vines with the appropriate quantities of water, sunshine, and warmth. For all these reasons, Finca Valpiedra is the only Rioja winery that belongs to the “Grandes Pagos de España Association” (Great Estates from Spain).
