Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial 2009
16 months in French and American oak barrels
The world´s best red wine at the International Wine Challenge of London
Abadía Retuerta offers a sleek, modern take on Tempranillo from one of the young stars remaking our notions of classic regions such as Ribera del Duero. In Sardón del Duero, just outside the classic region, the winery happily juxtaposes international grapes alongside Tempranillo to lovely, persuasive effect. Drink soon or over the next ten years.
An excellent depth of color (a garnet black cherry hue) reflects the wine’s young age. On the nose, the wine expresses jammy black and red fruits (wild blackberries, plums, morello cherries, strawberries, raspberries) and is very mineral and balsamic, typical of the Duero terroir, with floral hints (violets and lilac). In addition, there is good spice, revealing notes of nutmeg and subtle hints of cloves and bay leaf with touches of chocolate, toffee and licorice coming through in the background. A firm mouth-feel, fresh, savory and balanced, along with elegant tannins, superb length and a lingering finish enhance the wine’s great individual character without taking away any of its harmony.
